Curiosity Corner — February

Hello there, and winter greetings! If you live near where I do in southern Indiana, then you have finally been relieved of weeks of ice, snow, and colder temps for longer than usual. This has been a strange and challenging year already for many. For me personally, it has been on a very personal level and professionally as well, in the midst of so many changes and uncertainties happening in our nation and around the globe. There is real, palpable fear, confusion, and concern about what the future holds. Regardless of your political beliefs, I feel strongly that we must find a way to unite and share love with one another.

I grew up being a tree hugger, inspired by Jane Goodall and Mother Teresa. I, too, yearned to explore, challenge thoughts, and help make a difference in the world. However, I was told my entire childhood that I was too talkative, and into my adulthood, still too curious, too much of a dreamer, and interested in too many things. I used to allow those words and messages to harbor shame and unnecessary guilt, believing I was a failure and didn’t belong at home, school, or work. However, those parts of me that created some discomfort in others were also what helped me cope with and heal from my own various personal griefs and traumas. Sometimes, it was in healthy ways when exploring new healing modalities, and other times, not so much, when I impulsively numbed and distracted myself when younger.

Inviting more self-compassion toward those “flaws” has enabled me to take healthy risks and support more people on their healing journey, too. I now hope I never lose my childlike wonder or ability to easily connect or find beauty in most things.

This includes—the MOON! I’ve always felt connected to the moon and trees and have been curious about patterns and why things respond the way they do. However, holy cow, I’ve never been more drawn to the sky than in these past couple of months, and it’s no wonder—there is so much stuff going on up there. We can see several planets with our naked eye (they may look like stars, but they certainly stand out more—Saturn, Venus, Jupiter, and Mars). Here is a picture I took the other night of the new moon and Saturn in the sky and their reflection on my pond.

It’s pretty fascinating to think about the fact that we are essentially flesh-covered, electrical water bags walking around on a huge magnet on this planet we call home, Earth. Did you know we are moving at 1,000 miles per hour, spinning around a huge ball of burning gas suspended in a massive galaxy, and have a moon that spins around us at the same time?

I could write for hours and geek out about all the astrological things I’ve learned over this past year and how impactful it’s been in my life because I’ve never felt more seen, validated, and encouraged by better understanding my own birth chart and how important my moon sign is, which has helped me feel more connected to my higher power.

Did you know the moon changes signs every couple of days and can have a direct impact on your emotional life and emotional responses in its subtle influences on how it relates to your personality, attitudes, and needs, and where we grow and change? I look forward to sharing more about some future astrological offerings right here in our community in the coming months!

The West Sider’s Trauma

Sunsets come and go
Snow and darkness were all around
both inside and out
It wasn’t until that afternoon
I knew what she was talking about
