Soul-Making

Heart Breaking
Reality Shaking
Muscles Quaking
Soul-making

The heart cracks and light floods in
as does darkness
Grief, Longing
Despair, Terror
Was it always outside, waiting to be let in?
Or inside, pushing at the walls, crying to be free?

The places in my body that I cannot yet feel
Echo the places in your heart I cannot yet touch
How to make space?
Shall I clear-cut the native weeds, ripping out the seeds and roots of jealousy, selfishness, petty fears?
Or do I coax the snakes out of their burrows with enchanting song?
Watching as they hit the light and are forever changed?

All of this waiting
and striving
and plotting
and circumventing
When will I learn to allow?
Accept?
Love.

Heart quaking
Reality Breaking
Muscles Shaking
Soul-Making.

The West Sider’s Trauma

Sunsets come and go
Snow and darkness were all around
both inside and out
It wasn’t until that afternoon
I knew what she was talking about
